Quiet, luminous little tale based on the real-life murder of Emmett Till by two white men in 1950s Mississippi. McFadden uses this historical event to peg a family history, stretching into the past and future. I could have used a little more complexity and the magical elements did not specially appeal to me, but there's something beguiling about the simplicity of McFadden's prose and approach. I'll read more of her work, for sure.
