Ford is revered by many and following the success of Canada, his place amongst the greats seems secure. I'm not familiar with his work, so decided to backtrack to an earlier collection, to get a feel for his 'spread' so to speak. A disappointment. Maybe I was expecting the elegance and incisiveness of Carver, but I didn't get it here. The subject matter - small town Americana, the marginal, the dispossessed - presents rich material, but Ford throws away tension with way too many words. Or perhaps writing has changed in the 30 years since this was published and that's what I'm responding to.I'm going to talk about this on a future episode of Unpr!ntable, so look out for it there.
