I read books, I write about books, I would probably marry a book if I could find one who liked me enough. Three words to describe me mature, irresponsible, contradictory, unreliable...oh...that's four...

Notes From An Exhibition

Notes From An Exhibition - P Gale This is one of those books I feel guilty for not liking as much as everyone else did. Gale is a great writer, there's nothing wrong with the story or the way he develops it. I just didn't feel enthralled.Perhaps the closest I can come to putting my finger on why is this: in the site blurb, Gale is quoted as saying that Rachel Kelly (his main character) is one of the most frightening characters he has had to write about. I didn't find Rachel frightening at all. Annoying. Difficult. Demanding. Gifted. But not scary, not even remotely.Maybe I entered the book with the expectation of meeting much bigger characters than I ultimately did. Maybe that explains my sense of disappointment. Summary: beautifully written, small scale family drama.
